THE CARES GORGE PATH: 12 KM with assent of 350m approx, we walked narrow passes with gullies and the river flowing along the valley floor. The route took us through some small tunnels carved out of the rock and across bridges that hang over the valley with rocky mountains on either side of the trail. We followed the path at the beginning of the Gorge to the end.
MIRADOR DE ORDIALES AND COTALBA PEAK: 18 KM assent 950m in the Western massif of the Picos de Europa. We started from Pan de Carmen (just beyond Lake Enol) to Vegarredonda Refuge, then following a slightly rockier well defined path to the Ordiales refuge. We then picked up a less obvious path to the Mirador de Ordiales where we could look over the top and appreciate breathtaking views and 1,000m sheer drop down to the Angon Valley below. Now, we can be starting the ascent to the Cotalba peak. There’s an interesting little scramble just before we reach the top. After eating our lunch and taking full advantage of the views around us we retraced our steps back down the same route.
NARANJO DE BULNES: 16km with assent of 950m approx. We started just beyond Sotres at the tiny hamlet of Pandebano. We walked up to Collado Vallejo (1.500 m), where the huge monolith of the Naranjo de Bulnes (Pico Urriellu 2519 m) came into view, we then proceeded to base of the mountain (2.000 m) where there is a refuge where we spent an hour having lunch and watching rock climbers attempting to scale 600m sheer face. We descended down the same route we took up.
